What we do

We’re a small, independent design workshop based in Cumbria — focused on solving real problems through 3D printing, CAD, and functional design.

From custom brackets and jigs to short-run prototypes and mechanical parts, we help individuals, startups, and engineers bring ideas into the real world. Whether you’re building from scratch, adapting an existing design, or need a one-off solution — we’re here to make it work.

Everything is designed and manufactured in-house, with an emphasis on practical thinking, tight tolerances, and clean, reliable results. We approach every job with a problem-solver’s mindset — combining design experience with real-world application.

We don’t overpromise. We don’t overcomplicate. We just build what works.

Services

Custom fan design

Reverse Engineering

Transform existing parts into precise CAD models using advanced measurement techniques and Fusion 360. We recreate discontinued components, improve legacy designs, and develop replacement parts. Perfect for manufacturers needing exact replicas or design modifications of existing products.

Custom soft jaws, clamp and vice accessories

Tooling, Jigs, and adapters

Custom manufacturing solutions for your production needs. We design and 3D print specialised tooling, assembly jigs, and custom adapters using durable materials like PETG and PLA-CF. From simple fixtures to complex assembly aids, our bespoke tooling helps streamline manufacturing processes.

Prototypes & bespoke

Rapid prototyping services that bring your ideas to life. Our FDM 3D printing capabilities handle everything from concept validation to functional prototypes using PLA, PETG, and flexible TPU materials. We specialise in tight tolerances and clean finishes for engineering applications, helping businesses test designs before full production.

And so much more…

At North Lakes Design, we don't box ourselves into neat categories — because real-world problems rarely fit into them. Our services aren't limited to brackets or widgets; if it can be designed, printed, and made to work, we'll find a way to do it.

From standalone prototypes to parts that integrate seamlessly into existing machines, systems, or products, we're all about making the solution fit your world — not the other way around. We can incorporate nuts, bolts, heat-set inserts, wiring, and other hardware where needed, creating hybrid assemblies that combine the best of additive manufacturing with traditional components.

We're constantly testing new materials — some of which offer strength-to-weight ratios comparable to aluminium. Our material library spans from flexible TPU for gaskets and seals, to carbon-fibre reinforced filaments for structural applications, to reliable PETG for chemical resistance and durability. Each project gets matched to the right material for the job, not just what's convenient.

Whether you've got a vague idea sketched on a napkin, a physical part that needs rethinking, or a fully developed design ready for production, we speak your language. We work with everything from hand-drawn concepts to existing CAD files, broken components that need reverse engineering, or that brilliant idea that's been stuck in your head for months.

The beauty of our approach? We're only limited by imagination — and maybe gravity. But even then, we've printed some pretty impressive overhangs.

Get to know ME

I’m Carlos — designer, problem-solver, and founder of North Lakes Design.

NLD started with a simple need: a part that didn’t exist. So I designed it, printed it, and made it work. Since then, I’ve been helping others do the same — turning rough ideas into functional, well-made parts that solve real problems.

I’m based in Cumbria, working hands-on from my own workshop. No corporate fluff, no buzzwords — just solid design, practical thinking, and an obsession with making things that work.

If you're stuck, building something, or just need a second set of eyes — I’m here to help.

Design. Print. Solve. Repeat.
